Breath Centred Viniyoga - Anchoring Awareness Through Breath and Retention

October 13th, 2026
Welcome to the digital resource page for this week's Viniyoga practice. In today's session, we explored how the breath can serve as an anchor for the mind, moving away from mechanical repetition and toward mindful embodiment.
By pairing dynamic movement with intentional breath retentions (Kumbhaka), we learned how to generate steady internal warmth while simultaneously calming the nervous system.
Understanding the Practice: Dynamic Movement Meets Static Hold
In our Viniyoga tradition, asana is never about forcing the body into a rigid shape. Instead, the shape serves the breath. Today’s practice utilized a structured wave format:
The Dynamic Phase (5 Repetitions): Moving fluidly with the breath to lubricate joints, warm the fascia, and establish a rhythmic cadence.
The Static Phase (40-Second Holds): Settling into the posture to observe sensation, cultivate stillness, and integrate breath retentions—holding the breath out (Bahya Kumbhaka) during grounding forward folds, and holding the breath in (Antara Kumbhaka) during uplifting or expanding backbends and bridges.
Today’s Sequence At-A-Glance
Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
Action: 5 dynamic repetitions moving from standing to folding.
Hold: 2 rounds x 40 seconds, holding the breath out after the exhale (Bahya Kumbhaka).
Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I)
Action: 5 dynamic reps stepping into the lunge with arms rising on the inhale.
Hold: 2 rounds x 40 seconds, holding the breath in after the inhale (Antara Kumbhaka).
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog)
Action: 5 dynamic reps flowing between table top and down dog.
Hold: 2 rounds x 40 seconds, holding the breath out after the exhale (Bahya Kumbhaka).
Dwi-Pada Pitham (Two-Footed Support / Bridge Pose)
Action: 5 dynamic reps lifting hips with the inhalation.
Hold: 2 rounds x 40 seconds, holding the breath in after the inhale (Antara Kumbhaka).
Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
Action: 5 dynamic reps lifting the chest gently on the inhale.
Hold: 2 rounds x 40 seconds, holding the breath in after the inhale (Antara Kumbhaka).
Salabhasana (Locust Pose)
Action: 5 dynamic reps lifting chest and limbs on the inhale.
Hold: 2 rounds x 40 seconds, holding the breath in after the inhale (Antara Kumbhaka).
Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall / Restorative Inversion)
Hold: 2 minutes of effortless, quiet breathing to reset the spine and calm the heart rate.
Navasana (Boat Pose - Core Integration)
Action: 5 dynamic reps engaging the core.
Hold: 2 rounds x 40 seconds, holding the breath out after the exhale (Bahya Kumbhaka).
Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend)
Hold: A steady, cooling hold focusing entirely on lengthening and softening the exhalation.
Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
Conclusion: Settling into a comfortable upright seat for several rounds of balanced, calming alternate nostril breathing to seal the practice.
Tips for Your Home Practice This Week
Prioritize the Breath: If a breath retention (Kumbhaka) causes you to gasp, strain, or lose the smooth quality of your breathing, drop the retention immediately and return to a continuous, smooth inhale and exhale.
Less is More: You do not need a full hour to benefit from this sequence. Feel free to select just 2 or 3 movements (such as Warrior I and Bridge Pose) for a quick 10-minute morning reset.
